A driver who was ejected in a crash was then fatally run over by his own driverless car, with a passenger inside, the California Highway Patrol said.
The single-car crash was reported at 11:37 p.m. Saturday on a rural road west of Turlock.
A 2011 Honda was westbound at about 60 mph on Monte Vista Avenue, which runs between orchards. Where the road ends in a T-intersection, about a mile west of Highway 99, the Honda ran a stop sign and continued onto a private dirt road, the CHP press release said.
Fifty feet down the dirt road, the car hit a power pole, and the driver, a 51-year-old Stockton man, was ejected. The car then ran over him.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, a 22-year-old Stockton man, reported no injuries.
The driver had not been wearing a seat belt, and the CHP’s initial investigation suggested alcohol or drugs may have been a factor.
