SAN JOSE — A mixed-use complex that would bring hundreds of housing units to San Jose is being eyed at a site between the city’s downtown and the big regional malls to the west, a new proposal shows.

The project was proposed at a location on West San Carlos Street near Buena Vista Avenue in San Jose, according to the city planning documents.

Urban Villas, an affiliate that is attempting to develop the project, has shifted gears from an earlier proposal at the site, whose addresses range from 1530 through 1544 W. San Carlos St.

In a proposal that Urban Villas floated during 2019 and 2020, the project would have consisted of 173 condominiums for sale with 189 parking spaces.

The latest proposal consists of 237 apartments in an array of categories, as well as 198 parking spaces.

An estimated 17,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial spaces, such as retail sites, would be part of the mixed-use development, the proposal shows.

“The project is in the West San Carlos Urban Village and the property is designated as an ‘Urban Village’ land use,” according to the planning documents.

The eight-story project would be built on multiple parcels that together total 1.3 acres.

“This project proposes to demolish all existing buildings on site, including five commercial buildings, eight residential buildings and three service structures,” the proposal states.
