BERKELEY — No injuries were reported after a freight train struck an unoccupied vehicle on the tracks here Monday morning, authorities said.
The collision between the Union Pacific freight train and the vehicle happened about 12:22 a.m. at Gilman Street and the tracks, police said.
The train engine was damaged and the vehicle caught fire after the collision, authorities said. The train blocked the tracks at several intersections between Gilman and Virginia streets and Gilman Street at the tracks west of 4th Street was closed in both directions while Union Pacific police investigated. The street was reopened after several hours, authorities said.
Authorities are trying to determine who owns the vehicle and why it was unoccupied when it was hit.
