The San Jose Police Department is investigating an early morning traffic collision that left one person dead.
The crash occurred around 3:33 a.m. Saturday morning, the department said in a news release. A man driving a 2007 Toyota sedan was traveling eastbound on Hellyer Avenue when he collided with three parked cars, coming to a stop near the westbound lanes of the street.
The man got out of his car and was walking near the site of the crash when he was struck by a 2000 Dodge truck driving westbound on Hellyer Avenue, police said. The first driver sustained major injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the release.
The driver of the Dodge truck remained at the scene until police arrived. Officers said he showed signs of intoxication. He was arrested and booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and vehicular manslaughter, the release said.
Police are currently investigating the incident, which is the 44th fatal collision and 46th traffic death of 2022, the release said. Because the man was a pedestrian at the time of his death, this was also the 24th pedestrian fatality in the city this year, police said.
The man’s identity will be released by the Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office once his next of kin have been notified.
