Steven Finacom/for Bay Area News Group In Berkeley's Civic Center, the tallest redwood at the far left, standing near Old City Hall (the Maudelle Shirek Building), is the memorial tree planted a century ago on Memorial Day 1921 (then called “Decoration Day”), in honor of three Berkeley men who died in World War I.

Tax would last for 47 years, bonds could cost as much as 12%, yet there is no plan for how the money would be spent.
