OAKLAND — A person fatally shot Monday afternoon in a West Oakland neighborhood became the city’s 100th homicide of the year, authorities said.
Shortly after 2:53 p.m., officers responded to reports of ShotSpotter activity in the 1300 block of Kirkham Street in the city’s Oak Center neighborhood. When officers arrived, they found a victim on the ground suffering from several gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
As officers flooded the area to block off nearby streets and recover evidence, paramedics and Oakland Fire Department firefighters arrived and provided care.
According to a social-media post, an Oakland Police Department helicopter was circling the area overhead. Police asked residents to avoid the area.
Investigators did not release word of any motives or suspects in custody, as well as any suspect or associated vehicle description.
The killing is the 100th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year, after a fatal shooting Sunday in East Oakland and the tragic double fatal shooting that claimed two Berkeley High School students’ lives.
At this same time last year, Oakland police had investigated 105 homicides. The California Highway Patrol has also investigated five homicides on freeways in the city this year.
In a statement Monday, Oakland Police Officers’ Association President Barry Donelan said “[t]hese bitter homicide numbers paint the tragic story of Oakland; too few cops lead to too many homicides.” According to that statement, the city logged its previous 100th homicides on Dec. 7, 2020 and Sept. 20, 2021.
Police and Crime Stoppers of Oakland are offering up to $10,000 in reward money for information leading to the arrest of the killer. Anyone with information may call police at 510-238-3821 or 510-238-7950 or Crime Stoppers at 510-777-8572.
