OAKLAND — An Oakland police officer was hospitalized Sunday after a driver fleeing an East Oakland traffic stop struck them, authorities said.

Police said officers responded just before 10 a.m. to reports of an unresponsive male behind the wheel of a vehicle stopped in the middle of the road in the 5200 block of Wentworth Avenue.

Soon after police arrived and found the man, he woke up and briefly spoke with officers before trying to drive away at high speed, hitting an officer and knocking them to the ground.

Other officers tended to the officer and provided first aid before taking them to a hospital, where they were initially listed in stable condition after treatment for head and facial injuries, and later discharged.

Within a few hours, other officers managed to recover the abandoned vehicle in another part of the city. Some time later, officers found and arrested the driver. His location and exact charges were not immediately available Sunday night.
