SAN MATEO – A handgun, drugs and a young girl were found during a car stop Sunday night in San Mateo, according to police.

Officers stopped the car for an unspecified vehicle code violation shortly before midnight at La Selva Street and Casa de Campo, the San Mateo Police Department said in statement Monday.

While conducting a record check, officers learned that the driver, a 23-year-old Fremont resident, and her front passenger, a 20-year-old San Mateo resident, were on bail for pending criminal charges and that their car was searchable as a result, according to police. The backseat was occupied by a 5-year-old girl and two other adults.

Police said a loaded and unregistered .40-caliber Glock 23 was found inside a purse resting on the center console.

Officers also located 56.5 grams of suspected marijuana, 2.37 grams of cocaine and 90.05 grams of methamphetamine, along with $2,067 in cash, according to police.

The driver and front passenger were arrested and booked into San Mateo County jail on multiple charges related to narcotic violations, firearm violations and child endangerment.

The child was released to her grandparents. The other adult occupants were also released after an investigation determined they were not associated with the illegal items found in the car, police said.
