PLYMOUTH — The months-long search for Alexis Gabe has reached its tragic end.

A Plymouth resident found the 24-year-old Oakley woman’s skull while using his metal detector in a remote part of Amador County on Thursday, police said. An odontologist confirmed it was Gabe’s remains Friday, authorities said.

Gabe’s ex-boyfriend, 27-year-old Marshall Curtis Jones III, was shot and killed by police in Washington last June while they attempted to arrest him in connection with her disappearance. Contra Costa prosecutors have declined to file accessory charges against Jones’ mother.

Gabe’s disappearance led to a massive, statewide search, speculation about who was responsible and why, and a large-scale police investigation headed by Antioch and Oakley detectives.

Police now believe that Gabe’s body was dismembered and disposed of in multiple places. Her skull was found in an area near Jackson Road in Plymouth. The police investigation showed Jones had traveled to the area in the hours after her disappearance, authorities said.

Gabe went missing on Jan. 26 when she visited Jones at his home in Antioch. The city had offered a reward for information leading to her return that grew to $100,000. Antioch police obtained a warrant in late April for a wiretap on Jones’ mobile phone. “Phone intercept recordings, surveillance footage, cell data, and DNA evidence” were all part of a referral from police in the case, seeking the murder charge, according to the DA’s office.
