A suspected hit-and-run collision on Interstate 880 in Oakland overturned a tractor-trailer early Friday morning, igniting the big rig and killing the driver who was trapped inside, authorities said.
At around 1 a.m., a white Ford Crown Victoria sedan and another dark-colored sedan were speeding southbound on I-880 near Broadway when the white car tried to pass the International big rig and slammed into the driver’s side of the truck.
The big rig hit the highway barrier, flipped over and caught fire. The truck driver was unable to escape the cabin and died at the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Another vehicle then picked up the driver of the white Ford and fled the crash.
The collision is being investigated as a hit-and-run. The CHP was unable to provide any information about a potential suspect.
Authorities have not released the name of the driver who died.
