NEWARK – A man was shot and killed Friday afternoon in Newark, authorities said.
Officers were called to the 7600 block of Sunset Avenue around 2:20 p.m. for a report of gunshots, according to the Newark Police Department. They arrived to find a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
Police said the man received medical aid from emergency personnel but died of his injuries.
The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau will release the man’s identity after notification has been made to next of kin.
The shooting does not appear to be a random act, police said. Additional details were not immediately available.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
“These types of violent acts are not tolerated by the Newark Police Department or our community and put our community members at unnecessary risk,” police said in a statement. “Newark police detectives are urging anyone with information to come forward.”
