OAKLAND — A 43-year-old man who told police he was shot Monday night as he drove near Jack London Square was in stable condition Tuesday, authorities said.

The man, who gave a Lathrop address, told police he was driving in the area of Third and Jackson streets about 8 p.m. Monday when he heard gunfire and saw he had been hit in the abdomen.

The man told police he was able to drive to his girlfriend’s residence more than a mile away in East Oakland. She took him to a hospital.

Police are trying to determine a motive for the shooting and if the wounded man was the intended target. Investigators said no shell casings were recovered in the area and no vehicles or buildings were found to have been hit by gunfire.

No arrests were announced.
