Jeremy Runner had got out of his snowplow to help a stranded motorist near his Lake Tahoe ranch on New Year’s Day when he was run over by his own vehicle and critically injured, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said Monday.

“He was helping someone stranded in the snow,” Schieve told the Reno Gazette Journal. “He is always helping others.”

As of Monday evening, the Oscar-nominated Marvel star was recovering from surgery after suffering “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries” in the accident at his rural property near the Mount Rose Highway, between Lake Tahoe and Reno. CNN reported that Renner, 51, was in the intensive care unit at a Reno hospital in “critical but stable condition,” his spokesperson said.

The Modesto-born star of “The Hurt Locker” and “The Avengers” was well known in Reno and the surrounding area for doing good works for homeless shelters and other nonprofits, the Reno Gazette Journal reported. He also liked to renovate fire trucks, ambulances and snowplows on his rural property to help locals deal with wildfires and heavy blizzards, the Daily Mail added.

Renner was apparently trying to help out Sunday morning after Reno and Lake Tahoe were blanketed by around 6 to 12 inches of snow, with up to 18 inches falling at higher elevations, CNN said, citing the National Weather Service. Renner was injured while using his PistenBully snowplow to clear the roadway about a quarter mile from his property, with Schieve saying he was trying to help a stranded motorist.

TMZ reported that the vehicle rolled over Renner’s leg. A neighbor told TMZ that he was losing a lot of blood from the injury, while another neighbor, who is a doctor, was able to put a tourniquet on his leg until paramedics arrived. Renner was airlifted to a Reno hospital.

The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its deputies responded to a “traumatic injury” involving Renner in the area of Mount Rose Highway. In a news release, the Sheriff’s Office said the actor was the only person involved in the accident and that its Major Accident Investigation Team is looking into the circumstances of how it happened.

Schieve told the Reno Gazette Journal that she was immediately called when the accident happened on Sunday morning. She said she and the actor are friends and that he has helped the community more than most people know over the years because he doesn’t publicize his donations.

“He’s always calling and saying, ‘Hey Mayor, what do you need?’” Schieve said.

Earlier this month, Renner tweeted lightheartedly about the intense snow near Lake Tahoe. He has previously shared social media posts expressing his love for his secluded five-bedroom Sierra Nevada getaway and his respect for the nature that surrounds him there.

Renner is the father of a 9-year-old daughter, Ava, with his ex-wife Sonni Pacheco. He is best known for playing Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with “Thor” (2011) and “The Avengers” (2012), People reported. He most recently played the character in the Disney+ series Hawkeye. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performances in “The Hurt Locker” (2008) and in “The Town” (2010). He also has appeared in “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol” (2011), “American Hustle” (2013) and “Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation” (2015).
