SAN JOSE — One of the greatest players in Archbishop Mitty’s storied basketball history had her jersey retired on Friday night.
Danielle Robinson, a three-time Mercury News player of the year from 2005-07, became the first member of the girls basketball program to receive the honor.
She joins Aaron Gordon, whose Mitty basketball jersey was retired in 2020.
“On a personal level, I love D-Rob,” Mitty coach Sue Phillips told the Bay Area News Group. “She was such a blessing to the community and an amazing individual.”
The ceremony Friday was emotional for Robinson.
“Thank you for believing in me, thank you for trusting me,” she said. “It was an honor to represent this amazing school.”
Robinson averaged 15 points, eight rebounds, five assists and four steals per game during her senior season when she led Mitty to a state championship.
“I haven’t seen too many people quicker with the basketball, or defensively be able to impact the game with her quickness and length and anticipatory skills,” Phillips said.
Robinson went on to a prolific career at Oklahoma.
She is among four players in women’s college basketball history to accumulate 2,000 points, 700 assists and 300 steals in a career.
Drafted sixth overall in the 2011 WNBA draft by the San Antonio Stars, the guard has gone on to play in three all-star games.
She was traded last month from the Indiana Fever to the Atlanta Dream.
Robinson ranks 13th all-time in WNBA assists.
“I’m incredibly proud of Danielle,” Phillips said. “It couldn’t happen to a better person.”
