Police say the death was accidental.
RICHMOND — All lanes of Interstate 80 reopened to traffic Sunday after a vehicle sought by law enforcement became disabled in traffic, leading to the closure of multiple lanes for more than two hours, authorities said.
Shortly before 12:15 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers received word from the Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office that deputies had tried to carry out an enforcement stop on a blue Subaru whose driver was sought on a warrant and were seeking assistance.
CHP officers responded to deputies’ request by providing air support and traffic control along Interstate 80, shutting down multiple lanes in eastbound and westbound directions and working to safely divert traffic.
Just after 12:55 p.m., the CHP issued a Sig-alert for all I-80 lanes west of Cutting Boulevard, and soon after learned that the sought vehicle had become disabled for unknown reasons in eastbound I-80’s No. 1, or left-most, lane.
Other officers responded to the vehicle and managed to take its driver into custody. A juvenile found inside the vehicle was reunited with their mother, and animal control officers also took a dog into custody.
The traffic alert was lifted at 1:56 p.m., with delays continuing for about half an hour mostly in westbound directions.
A Contra Costa Sheriff’s spokesman did not respond to a request for information about the incident Sunday afternoon.
