PITTSBURG — One person went by ambulance to a hospital Monday, and a hazardous-materials team was called following the leak of a substance at a Safeway, officials said.
Fire crews and paramedics were dispatched to the store on Bailey Road about noon, according to social-media posts from the Contra Costa Fire Protection District.
Authorities evacuated the store.
The district said crews later determined the leaked substance to be freon, a non-combustible gas that’s used as a refrigerant to produce cold air.
An employee who was having trouble breathing was taken to a hospital, according to fire officials. There was no information immediately available on the employee’s condition.
