Milpitas Police are seen detaining Kevin Parkourana, a San Jose resident at Arizona Ave and Midwick Drive near Milpitas High School in Milpitas Calif., after two people were run over and killed and two others were critically injured in separate stabbings in San Jose, while a fifth person was stabbed to death in Milpitas — all apparently by the same suspect according to police. SAN JOSE — The man arrested and blamed for a lengthy stabbing and carjacking rampage last week that left three people dead and several more injured across San Jose and Milpitas has been formally charged with murder and an array of other offenses, records show.

Kevin Parkourana, 31, of San Jose, was charged Tuesday by the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, according to the county’s online court portal. The precise number and range of charges was not immediately available Tuesday morning, but Parkourana is scheduled to be arraigned in a San Jose courtroom Tuesday afternoon.

He is being held without bail in the Main Jail in San Jose, next door to the Hall of Justice where he is expected to formally hear and answer to the charges.

Also Tuesday, the county Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office formally released the identities of the three people who died allegedly at the hands of Parkourana: Nguyen Pham, 72, and Phuc Pham, 71, both of San Jose; and Jiwanjot Dhariwal, a 26-year-old Milpitas resident.

The motive for the attacks remains unclear as authorities, including San Jose and Milpitas police, continue to investigate the case. Court records show Parkourana had a history of mental health holds and criminal behavior and felonies — including bomb-making and threatening a man with a dagger — and was out of jail on active probation.

Police say the alleged crime spree began just after 3 p.m. June 2 on Kooser Road and Dellwood Way, near the Parkouranas’ family home in San Jose, when Parkourana allegedly carjacked a tan Honda minivan and stabbed the male driver, who was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

About 20 minutes later, Parkourana then allegedly stole a Honda Pilot in a shopping mall parking lot on Hillsdale Avenue and stabbed and seriously wounded the male driver. He then hit a pedestrian before driving toward downtown San Jose where, around 4 p.m., he hit another pedestrian, then got out and stabbed him, police said.

No more than 10 minutes later, police say Parkourana was traveling near East Santa Clara Street when he turned onto 16th Street and drove into the Phams, who were fatally injured, as well as another person who survived. Video footage of the attack outside the Pham’s home provided by a neighbor shows a dark SUV accelerate into a driveway and disappear behind a hedge just before a crash and loud tire screeches can be heard on the audio. The car then makes a quick U-turn, reappearing in the frame and driving away.

Parkourana subsequently hit someone riding a motorized scooter while heading north toward Alum Rock in San Jose, police said. He made his way to Milpitas, where police say he entered the Smart & Final on Jacklin Road and stabbed Dhariwal, who later died at the hospital.

Around 6:15 p.m., about three hours after the violent stretch began, Parkourana was swarmed by police and arrested on Arizona Avenue. Investigators have said they believe that he acted alone, and there has been no evidence to suggest that Parkourana knew any of the people he is alleged to have attacked.
