Joe Field, founder of Free Comic Book Day and owner of Flying Colors Comics and Other Cool Stuff in Concord, has some reading recommendations for "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" fans (Jim Harrington, staff)

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” has been one of the big hits of 2023, with many viewers returning to theaters multiple times to watch (and re-watch) the amazing animated film.

And now fans find themselves in the position where they are counting down the days until the next chapter — reportedly to be called “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse” — is released in May 2024.

Yet, they don’t have to wait until spring to dive further into the “Spider-Verse.” Instead, they can visit their local comic shops and find a wealth of related stories to enjoy.

We asked Joe Field — the owner of Flying Colors Comics & Other Cool Stuff in Concord — to come up with some reading recommendations for Spider-Verse fans. And, no surprise, Field — who also happens to be the founder of the mega-successful Free Comic Book Day — had plenty of suggestions for us.

Here are some of his recommendations. The comments below each title come directly from Field.

“Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection: Great Power”

Want to jump on the whole spectacular Spider-Man mythos? The best way to do that is to go back to the beginning to the original stories that started it all. This hefty collection, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, is a great intro to the characters and villains that have helped make Spider-Man great.

“Spider-Man: Miles Morales” by Brian Bendis and Sara Pichelli”

Miles Morales was originally an “Ultimate Universe” character, an alternate reality of the Marvel Universe. In this graphic novel, Miles is integrated into the primary Marvel Universe, joining the Avengers, rubbing shoulders with Iron Man, Captain America and the Black Cat.

“Edge of Spider-Verse”

(The book) features a number of the characters from “Across the Spider-Verse,” along with many more characters spun from the alternate Spider-Verses where things seem familiar and yet brand new.

“Spider-Ham: Great Power, No Responsibility”

Published by Scholastic (not by Marvel!), this all-ages friendly adventure is hilarious and fun — just like Spider-Ham is in the Spider-Verse movies.

“Spider-Man Across the Universe: The Art of the Movie”

Here’s a deep dive to immerse yourself in the “Spider-Verse” movie and get a feel for all the creativity it took to bring the story and the multitude of Spider-Verse characters to life.
