Players take on the role of Jak in "Immortals of Aveum." (Electronic Arts)
One of the harder parts about launching a new intellectual property is that it can be hard to explain to a curious audience. That can be doubly so with video games when you have to get your hands on a project to truly understand the feel of the work.
That difficulty is part of the reason why gamers see so many sequels. It’s easier and safer to convey what’s going on with an established franchise rather than a new one. With “Immortals of Aveum,” Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios did a deeper dive on what to expect from the fantasy-inspired first-person shooter.
The video below explains the premise and the situation behind the protagonist Jak. More importantly though, it details some of the gameplay. It focuses on mechanics such as the Sigils, which channel soldiers’ magic. They come in three colors that resemble different types of firearms. It goes deeper into Strike spells and specialized attacks called Furies that are powerful but limited by special mana.
Meanwhile, not all magic in “Immortals of Aveum” is focused on attacks, Ascendant Studios crafted Augments that help players with traversal and puzzle solving. In addition, Control spells are tied to totems and lets players do actions such as slow enemies down or pull them close to them with Lash. It creates gameplay combos comparable to what FPS fans saw in “Bulletstorm.”
Lastly, the clip reveals the Dominion Spell called Immolate, which is essentially Jak’s ultimate attack. It’s a beam that melts enemies in his path. You can find out more about the game, which was delayed a month for polish, according to the studios founder Bret Robbins.
“Immortals of Aveum” is scheduled for release Aug. 22 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S and PC.
