A hiker found dead on a Modoc County peak has been identified as an Oakland man, the sheriff’s office said.

The body was discovered by another hiker on Sunday, July 2, on Eagle Peak, and was recovered the next day by a rescue crew.

On Thursday, the Modoc County sheriff’s office said the man was Ben Kiyoshi Nomura-Weingrow, 44, of Oakland. The announcement described him as an experienced hiker who was familiar with the area.

The cause of death is not known, pending autopsy results, but the sheriff’s office said foul play is not suspected.

Eagle Peak is in the Warner Mountains about 25 miles southeast of Alturas; at 9,892 feet, it is the highest point in Modoc County. The hike requires no technical gear but is strenuous, with elevation gain of 4,200 feet. Nomura-Weingrow’s body was found about 1,000 feet below the summit.
