SANTA CLARA — After getting the bright idea to allegedly steal sunglasses from the same San Jose department store two days in a row, a man was arrested on suspicion of grand theft after taking home nearly $140,000 worth of merchandise from several Macy’s locations throughout the Bay Area, according to authorities.

In a social media post Friday morning, Santa Clara police detailed two alleged theft incidents at the Macy’s Men’s store in San Jose’s Westfield Valley Fair Mall in early June. A suspect, then-unknown, took high-end designer sunglasses from the store on consecutive days totaling some $7,851 in losses.

Santa Clara detectives assigned to the case found out that the same suspect was accused of similar crimes at other Macy’s stores in Alameda County, Contra Costa County, San Mateo County and may have been linked to thefts in Santa Cruz County. The suspect was then identified with help of other agencies.

The suspect — a 30-year-old San Jose man — was then connected to five cases in Santa Clara and a total of 17 throughout Santa Clara County, police said, leading the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office to issue an arrest warrant.

The suspect was arrested on June 20 by San Jose police after he was caught in an attempt to steal more merchandise from the Macy’s store inside Valley Fair. He was booked on suspicion of grand theft.

The total estimated loss from the stolen sunglasses was $139,000, according to Santa Clara police.
