A smoke tornado roils from the Vega Fire on Ridgecrest Road outside Pajaro Wednesday afternoon. The blaze scorched 5-7 acres on a densely wooded hillside near Lewis Road. The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office called for evacuations on Vega and Hayes roads, plus all connecting tributary streets. The fire broke out around 1:30 p.m. and the response included units from Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties, helicopters and air tankers.
