SAN JOSE — Police have arrested a teenager who was driving a stolen car that struck and killed a man in San Jose over the weekend, officers said Monday.

The victim of the fatal accident, which occurred in the 1100 block of Winchester Boulevard, has yet to be identified.

The driver of the stolen vehicle that caused the deadly accident was identified only as a juvenile male.

San Jose police officers arrested the driver and transported him to a local hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.

The fatal crash occurred on Sept. 3 at approximately 3:22 a.m. the San Jose Police Department reported Monday.

“A 2019 Hyundai SUV, occupied by a lone juvenile male driver, was traveling northbound on Winchester Boulevard when it left the roadway and struck an adult male pedestrian on the sidewalk,” the police department stated.

The crash occurred on Winchester Boulevard between Walgrove Way and Greentree Way in San Jose.

“The vehicle continued northbound on the sidewalk, ultimately colliding with a tree just before Walgrove Way,” San Jose police said.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Hyundai was arrested and taken to a hospital.

“It was later discovered that the Hyundai was an unreported stolen vehicle,” authorities said in a release that was prepared by San Jose Police Officer Steve Aponte.

The Santa Clara County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the victim pending notification of next of kin.

“This is the 33rd fatal collision and the 34th traffic death of 2023,” San Jose police said of the crash. “This was also the 19th pedestrian death of 2023.”

Anyone with information on this investigation is urged to contact Detective Eliseo Malvido of the San Jose Police Department’s Traffic Investigations Unit at 4206@sanjoseca.gov or 408-277-4654.
