FREMONT — Four people were arrested Tuesday for their roles in two separate carjackings that caused shelter-in-place protocols at two elementary schools, police said.
All of them were juveniles.
In a statement, police said they first responded about 1 p.m. to a report of an attempted armed carjacking in the area of Sundale Drive and Wall Common. That area is close Brier Elementary School, and police said a shelter-in-place went into effect while police searched. It stayed in place until after the arrests.
The juveniles involved failed to take the victim’s vehicle and ran into a nearby apartment complex, police said. Officers found them and arrested them there. According to police, one of the suspects had a BB gun.
Shortly after the arrests, officers were alerted via community cameras to a carjacked vehicle in the area of Grimmer Drive and Automall Parkway. That vehicle had been taken Monday from the Gateway Plaza Shopping Center.
According to police, one of three juveniles involved was armed with a handgun.
Police said that following the camera alert, officers found the vehicle in the area of Sundale Drive and Hilo Street. When they attempted to stop it, a pursuit ensued, police said.
The pursuit ended at the parking lot at Millard Elementary School in the 5200 block of Valpey Park Ave. Two suspects still in the car got of the vehicle and ran, police said. A third suspect jumped out during the pursuit, they said. Police haven’t found that person.
The school went into a shelter-in-place, and police said school security helped officers to capture the two.
All of the four juveniles involved in the carjackings were booked into the Alameda County Juvenile Detention Facility.
