SAN JOSE — Police said little Tuesday afternoon about the deaths a day earlier of two young children, who drowned at a San Jose home day care facility.
Authorities did not offer any new public information about what they believe happened before the children were found Monday morning. At a Tuesday-afternoon news gathering, Officer Steve Aponte said that the two children were under the ages of 5 years, but did not release their identities.
Investigators continued combing through evidence after the drownings, which took place at a home daycare facility on the 1000 block of Fleetwood Drive in San Jose. Police said Monday that officers had assisted rescuers from San Jose Fire with a welfare check at 9:05 a.m.
The three children were in a state of “severe medical distress” when they were found, Aponte said Tuesday. All three were taken to hospitals, where two were pronounced dead.
Aponte did not release any update Tuesday on the condition of the third child.
Police said they were working with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, as well as other local agencies, to determine whether anyone would be held criminally responsible for the deaths of the 2 children.
“Nearly 24 hours after this incident, all of us are in shock,” Aponte said. “This is the type of call that is the worst a parent could receive.”
