SAN RAMON, CA - MARCH 19: Traffic backs up along southbound Interstate 680 near Crow Canyon Road after a gravel truck overturned and spilled it's load closing all but one lane on Thursday, March 19, 2020, in San Ramon, Calif. (Aric Crabb/Bay Area News Group)

A stretch of southbound Interstate 680 between Pleasanton and Sunol will be closed this weekend for a Caltrans project, the agency said.

A crew will be replacing a portion of deteriorating roadway with new pavement between the I-680 connector with Interstate 580 and state Highway 84 in Sunol. The closure goes into effect at 9 p.m. Friday and will remain in effect until 4 a.m. Monday.

The closures will be rescheduled if the weather turns sour or other unanticipated developments occur, the agency said. They added that the full weekend closure will allow workers to avoid three months of night-time road closures to do the work.

Motorists in central Contra Costa County are urged to take Hwy 4 west to westbound Interstate 80 to southbound I-880 or westbound Hwy 24 to I-880. Motorists in the Tri-Valley can take westbound I-580 to state Hwy 238 to southbound I-880 or eastbound I-580 to Hwy 84 to southbound I-680.
