OAKLAND — An Oakland police officer shot and killed a person early Tuesday morning near City Hall, according to authorities.

Kim Armstead, a public information officer with the department, confirmed that police responded to the 300 block of Frank Ogawa Plaza after receiving a gunshot-detection alert just before 4 a.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, the officers found a person suffering from a gunshot wound, and that person was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Armstead did not specify how police had interacted with the person found fatally shot. She did not clarify why police were responding to a gunshot-detection alert from a third-party system and not to a shots-fired call on the police radio if an officer had been involved in the shooting.

She said “the officer involved in this shooting was not physically injured” and had been placed on paid administrative leave, per policy.

Armstead did not respond to questions from reporters gathered at the scene of the shooting.

This is a developing report. Check back for details.
