MORGAN HILL — Police are searching for an armed suspect who broke into more than half a dozen cars Thursday morning in Morgan Hill.

Officers were called to Depot Street around 2:20 a.m. for a report of a vehicle that was speeding with its alarm sounding, the Morgan Hill Police Department said in a news release. They arrived to find the vehicle still in the area and tried to stop the driver.

The driver did not pull over, police said, and the officers gave chase. The pursuit, however, was quickly called off “due to unsafe and reckless driving” by the driver.

Officers later obtained video surveillance that showed a suspect standing outside the vehicle holding a handgun outfitted with a high-capacity magazine, police said.

An investigation revealed the vehicle was stolen, but had not yet been reported as such, police said.

In addition, officers determined the suspect had vandalized and burglarized at least seven vehicles on Depot Street, East Third Street and East Fourth Street, police said.

In the wake of the crime spree, police cautioned residents not to intervene in any criminal activity and to instead call 911 as soon as possible.

“We would also like to remind everyone to remove all valuables from their vehicle and remain highly vigilant while parking in well-lit areas,” police said in the news release.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact Sgt. Scott Purvis at 669-253-4912 or scott.purvis@morganhill.ca.gov, or the anonymous tip line at 800-222-8477.
