Basketball roundup: Archbishop Mitty girls, De La Salle boys among Saturday’s winners

Girls basketball

No. 1 Archbishop Mitty 95, St. Joseph’s-Santa Maria 63

The reigning NorCal Open Division champions and undisputed top team in the Bay Area started its season with a dominant victory over St. Joseph’s-Santa Maria. 

Mitty’s two superstars were unstoppable. Super-sophomore McKenna Woliczko had 33 points and 15 rebounds, and point guard Morgan Cheli had 22 points, 11 assists and five rebounds in her first game since announcing her college commitment to perennial power UConn. 

Elana Weisman had 16 points, and Belle Bramer scored 12 after sitting out all of last season. 

Priory 62, Windsor 27

Priory 71, Pinole Valley 31

After losing the first game at the Cardinal Newman Classic, Priory rebounded with a pair of easy victories over other NorCal opponents. 

In the first game, Adelaide Chan finished the game with 21 points and 10 steals, while forward Ugreat Daniels had 23 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Sasha Johnson scored 10 points and had three steals. 

In the next game against Pinole Valley, Daniels had 24 points, 19 rebounds and made six 3-pointers. Johnson and Chan combined for 31 points, and Jordyn Moss had 10 points and 12 rebounds. 

Boys basketball

No. 1 De La Salle 57, Central Catholic-Oregon 56

De La Salle continued to rack up victories over elite out-of-region opponents. After opening the season with a victory against SoCal powerhouse Centennial-Corona, the Spartans slipped past Central Catholic-Oregon to win the Chris Vontoure Spartan Classic, an event hosted by the Concord school.

Tournament MVP Alec Blair scored 13 points, as did senior point guard Leo Ricketts.  Braddock Kjellsvig, a 6-foot-7 post player, scored 12 points. Darrell Cenido provided a spark off the DLS bench. 

Sacred Heart Prep 84, Terra Nova 48

SHP cruised past Terra Nova at the Crusader Classic at Archbishop Riordan. JP Kerrigan led the way with 20 points and TJ O’Brien scored 16 points. Drew Wagner helped provide even more scoring balance when he put in 13 points for the Gators. 

Cupertino 50, Sequoia 27

Cupertino jumped out to a 17-5 first quarter lead and never looked back as the Pioneers routed Sequoia. Soham Nighojkar made 8 of 13 shots and scored 22 to go along with seven rebounds for the winning team. Max Lin scored 11 and Max Feidan scored nine.
