BERKELEY — A huge housing tower with 500-plus residences is being eyed in downtown Berkeley on the site of a restaurant row slated to be demolished if the project is built, city documents show.
The project would consist of a housing tower with 599 residences, including dozens of low-income units, according to files posted by the Berkeley Planning Department.
A dining area could sprout on the roof of the new housing highrise, in something of a counterbalance to the loss of the restaurants on the street level.
A 28-story tower would accommodate the several hundred housing units, the documents show.
The residential complex would be built along Shattuck Avenue between Berkeley Way and University Avenue, the city files show.
A rooftop restaurant would be part of the project. Ground-level commercial spaces, potentially along Shattuck Avenue, would also be included in the development.
The project developer, NX Ventures, is hoping to achieve a streamlined review process using provisions in a state law known as SB 330.
An estimated 58 units would be set aside for very low-income residents through an official restriction on the property deed.
The addresses of the buildings that would be demolished are at 1950,1974,1984 and 1998 Shattuck Avenue and 2071 University Avenue, according to the planning documents.
At present, several restaurants operate at these addresses, according to Google Maps. These include Tane Vegan Izakaya, Bangkok Noodles and Thai BBQ, Spats restaurant and saloon, Turkish Kitchen, and McDonald’s restaurant.
