The San Jose Sharks placed forward Ryan Carpenter and defenseman Ty Emberson on injured reserve on Monday, adding to an already sizeable group of banged-up players.

Emberson did not play Sunday in the Sharks’ 6-5 loss to the New York Rangers with what was described as a lower-body injury. It was not immediately known what happened to Carpenter, as he had close to 16 minutes of ice time and scored his first goal of the season in the loss.

Emberson will be eligible to come off IR before the Sharks play the Vegas Golden Knights on Dec. 10 and Carpenter can be activated again for the Dec. 12 at home against the Winnipeg Jets, although it’s unclear whether either player will be ready to play by those dates.

Sharks center Nico Sturm also did not play Sunday with a lower-body ailment but was still on the active roster as of Monday. Other Sharks on injured reserve are forwards Luke Kunin, Filip Zadina, and Oskar Lindblom. Sharks captain Logan Couture (lower body) began the season on the injured non-roster list and has yet to play or practice with the team this season.

Kunin was placed on IR by the Sharks on Saturday.

The Sharks, who play the New York Islanders on Tuesday at UBS Arena, now have 21 players on the active roster and have not announced whether they will be recalling anyone from the Barracuda. The Sharks are presently carrying 12 forwards, including Jacob MacDonald, seven defensemen, and two goalies.

PROSPECTS CHOSEN: Sharks draft picks Will Smith, 18, and Eric Pohlkamp, 19, were both named to Team USA’s preliminary roster for this month’s IIHF World Junior Championships.

Smith, selected fourth overall by the Sharks in June’s NHL Draft and a freshman at Boston College, was among 16 forwards named to the roster. He has 22 points in 16 games for the No. 3 Golden Eagles. Pohlkamp, taken in the fifth round by the Sharks in June, is among 10 defensemen, as he had eight points in 14 games for Bemidji State entering this week.

Left off the roster was forward Quentin Musty, who was taken 26th overall by the Sharks in June. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Musty has 31 points in 16 games for Sudbury of the OHL.

Team USA will announce its final roster for the World Junior Championships on Dec. 17. The tournament begins on Dec. 26 in Sweden.
