OAKLAND — A 27-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and child abuse for allegedly shooting a woman in front of her 4-year-old daughter after the victim got into a fight with the defendant’s girlfriend, court records show.
Daniel Esparza-Flores, of San Leandro, was charged Nov. 29 and entered a not guilty plea in December. He is set for a preliminary hearing on Jan. 16, and has been released from jail while the charges are pending, court records show.
Esparza-Flores allegedly shot the woman in the hip last Oct. 22. The woman was hospitalized in critical condition but survived the shooting, police said.
According to Oakland police, Esparza-Flores fired at the woman after she and Esparza-Flores’ girlfriend got into a fistfight. Authorities say the victim and her 4-year-old daughter were in the same vehicle when he opened fire.
Esparza-Flores was identified as a suspect in early November, but wasn’t arrested until Nov. 24, after he drove up to the scene of a vehicle collision involving his girlfriend, police said. Inside his car, officers allegedly found a loaded Glock pistol.
