PACIFICA — Damage suffered from late-December storms has forced a temporary closure of the Pacifica Pier, city officials announced Thursday.

In a news release, the city of Pacifica said its Public Works Engineering Division and an engineering consultant determined the pier is “unsafe for users and visitors” after it was damaged amid a storm containing abnormally large waves on Dec. 28.

According to the news release, the pier suffered damage on the west-facing deck and concrete railing.

The closure, which began Friday, will last until at least Jan. 26. Pacifica officials said a structural assessment will be performed beginning next week. Once the assessment concludes on Jan. 25, a determination will be made regarding a potential reopening of the pier.

The L-shaped structure, popular with crabbers and fisherman since its construction in 1973, was closed for some two months in 2021 after heavy damage from storms and high tides.
