Shalene Gupta, who graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2009 with degrees in creative writing and psychology, wrote “The Cycle” about her experience with premenstrual dysphoric syndrome, research about the disorder and the story of how it became a legitimate diagnosis. “The Cycle” will be released on Feb. 27 from Flatiron Books.

Premenstrual dysphoric disorder, or PMDD is a menstruation-related mood disorder that, before Shalene Gupta received treatment, caused her to have monthly depressive episodes.
