SAN JOSE — Police have announced the arrest of a suspect in the deadly shooting of a man in East San Jose near the turn of the new year.

The shooting was reported at 7:26 p.m. on Dec. 30 near Calle de Guadalupe and Plaza de Guadalupe, which is off Alum Rock Avenue just west of North Jackson Avenue. Responding San Jose police officers found a wounded man who was rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

He has since been identified by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office as 40-year-old Hector Maldonado Jr., a San Jose resident. An autopsy concluded that he died of a gunshot wound in his groin and right thigh.

An ensuing investigation identified 35-year-old San Jose resident Bonifascio Limon as a suspect in the shooting. Last Thursday, police say a police helicopter, drawing on images taken by automated license-plate readers, followed Limon to a home in San Jose, and directed a SWAT team and specialized arrest team to apprehend him.

Police said Limon was captured after a short chase that involved a police dog unit. Jail records show he was booked into the county Main Jail in San Jose where he was being held without bail. Court records show he was formally charged in the shooting Monday and was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday.

Anyone with information related to the case can contact Detective Sgt. John Van Den Broeck at 3829@sanjoseca.gov, Detective Amanda Estantino at 4339@sanjoseca.gov, or both at 408-277-5283. Tips can be left with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-7867 or at siliconvalleycrimestoppers.org.
