CASTRO VALLEY — A Pleasanton homicide suspect was found dead Thursday afternoon inside a vehicle on Interstate 580 after a standoff with police that shut down the freeway, authorities said.

Authorities initially said the man “succumbed to his own injuries” and said additional details would be released later.

The man was reportedly wanted for a Pleasanton homicide, but police did not say when or where in the city it occurred. Authorities said the man was pursued by Pleasanton police and crashed about 11:30 a.m. in the westbound lanes of Interstate 580 between 164th and 150th avenues.

Officers from several departments responded to the scene, including some in an armored vehicle. At one point an officer could be seen firing into the vehicle, but it was not immediately known if the officer was firing bullets or another kind of projectile.

Officers were able to gain entry into the vehicle around 12:25 p.m. and found the man deceased. The Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau was responding to the scene.

Westbound lanes of the freeway remained closed at 164th Avenue and eastbound lanes were closed at 150th Avenue as of 1:10 p.m., the California Highway Patrol said.

The CHP did not give a time when the lanes would be reopened.

This is a developing report. Check back for updates.
