HAYWARD — An officer pursuing suspects involved in an armed burglary in the city’s industrial area crashed a patrol SUV and was hospitalized Wednesday, police said.
The extent and severity of the officers’ injuries were not known immediately, though police spokesperson Ofcr. Cassondra Fovel said they were not life-threatening.
The suspects got away.
According to Fovel, the officer responded to a burglary in progress at a building in the 2500 block of W. Winton Avenue about 5:35 a.m. and saw several people armed with guns entering the business. Police did not say what kind of business it was, citing the investigation.
As the suspects fled the scene, the officer followed one vehicle. He crashed in the 21000 block of Cabot Boulevard and sheared a fire hydrant that flooded the area, according to police.
Police did not have a description of the vehicle.
Fire crews were on the scene, dealing with the aftermath of the sheared hydrant.
No other information was available immediately.
