SAN LEANDRO – A 33-year-old Oakland man has been arrested on suspicion of shooting a 4-year-old child while trying to recover a stolen vehicle last week in San Leandro, police said Monday.
The shooting happened around 2 p.m. on Feb. 28 in the 400 block of West Juana Avenue, near Santa Rosa Street, the San Leandro Police Department said in a news release. Officers arrived to find the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
The child was taken to a hospital to be treated for the injury, which was not considered life-threatening, police said.
An investigation revealed that the suspect had gone to a multi-family residential property to recover a vehicle he had reported stolen earlier. While standing in a shared driveway, he fired a handgun five times into one unit and once into an adjacent unit, police said.
The child, who was not the intended target, was the only one struck by the gunfire, police said.
Police said detectives used surveillance footage, public safety cameras and law enforcement sources to identify the suspect as Adam Johnson. He was taken into custody on Feb. 29.
The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has since charged Johnson with two counts of attempted murder, police said.
