Deer are seen on Catalina Island in 2016. The Catalina Island Conservancy had asked for a permit to kill the mule deer on the island using sharpshooters in helicopters. They say the deer are destroying native plants and causing environmental damage. After opposition from residents and the L.A. County Board of Supervisors (on April 23, 2024), the Conservancy said it was dropping the plan to kill the deer via helicopters on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. Other means would be considered.
