SAN JOSE — A police officer was seriously wounded and another was injured Thursday night after they were shot while investigating a disturbance in South San Jose, authorities said.

The man described as the suspect in the shootings was also shot and wounded after officer returned fire and remained in critical but stable condition at a hospital early Friday morning, according to social media posts from San Jose police.

The encounter occurred around 10:30 p.m. after officers responded to the 6100 block of San Ignacio Avenue — a commercial area off Bernal Road on the southern edges of the city — to investigate a reported disturbance. Police said after the officers made contact with a man involved in the call, the man opened fire and hit two of them.

One of the officers suffered life-threatening injuries but was in stable condition at a hospital Thursday morning, police said. A second officer was taken by ambulance to a hospital and was treated for moderate injuries before being released.

The suspect also suffered what police described as life-threatening injuries.

Police closed San Ignacio Avenue from Bernal Road to Great Oaks Boulevard, and also shut down westbound Bernal Road from Monterey Road to San Ignacio Avenue to examine the crime scene. Additional details were not immediately available Friday morning.

The last San Jose police officer to be shot and wounded in the line of duty was injured Aug. 16 last year while responding to a domestic disturbance at an apartment complex near Auzerais Avenue and Race Street. The woman officer was ambushed by a man involved in the disturbance and shot in the abdomen, inflicting serious injuries. The gunman was later charged with attempted murder of a peace officer.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
