OAKLAND — A 34-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a Jan. 7 fatal shooting here, court records show.
Elijah Rucker, of Oakland, was charged with murdering 34-year-old Romell Wright, as well as with being a felon in possession of a firearm, records show. He is being held in Santa Rita Jail without bail.
Rucker was identified as a suspect through “video surveillance evidence and numerous witness statements,” police said in court records. When he was arrested he requested a lawyer rather than agree to police questioning, authorities said.
Wright was shot a little before 8 a.m. on Jan. 7, on the 1700 block of 89th Avenue in Oakland. Police said at the time that he and his killer were overheard arguing, possibly about a debt that was owed.
The criminal complaint says that Rucker is not allowed to possess guns due to seven prior convictions, including for robbery, burglary, and drug possession. He is set to appear in court and enter a plea on Monday, records show.
