A San Ramon man who went missing on a motorcycle trip was found dead in a river in Modoc County, the sheriff’s department said.

William Robert Knight, 73, had last spoken to family members on Thursday, May 30, when he was in Lakeview, Oregon.

His itinerary had him traveling about 250 miles Friday to Graeagle, in Plumas County, and then covering the final 250 miles to his San Ramon home on Saturday. When he didn’t show up as planned, his family reported him missing.

The official search began Monday and focused on Alturas, where the last pings from his phone were recorded Friday morning.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, a driver called 911 to report a body in the South Fork Pit River along Highway 395 about 4 miles south of Alturas. The body was confirmed as Knight’s, and his BMW motorcycle was found in the same area.

The Modoc County sheriff’s office is investigating the cause of death, and the California Highway Patrol is investigating the circumstances of the apparent crash.
