SAN JOSE — Residents were warned Thursday to be aware after somebody spotted a mountain lion near a regional park.

In a statement on social media, city of San Jose officials said the lion was near Kelley Park. The entrance to the park is in the 1300 block of Senter Road, and the park houses the largest disc golf course in the the city.

The advisory did not say when the sighting occurred. The city sent out the advisory via social media on Thursday at 4:29 p.m.

Officials reminded residents that mountain lions are a protected species and that they should never be approached. Fight back if attacked.

Anyone seeing a mountain lion should back away slowly while facing the animal; stand tall, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms or throwing objects, officials said. Pick up children without bending over or ever turning your back — both could trigger the lion to chase.

There have been five reported sightings in San Jose since May 30.
