A man accused of assaulting a woman at a Stanton apartment complex was hospitalized after he was shot by a rideshare driver who intervened Sunday night, June 2, authorities said.
The rideshare driver called 911 just before 7:50 p.m. to report the shooting in the 7100 block of Custer Way, within Bradford Place, an apartment complex south of Katella Avenue and east of Knott Avenue, Orange County sheriff’s officials said.
The rideshare driver was dropping off a passenger in the area when he saw the assault in progress, the Sheriff’s Department said in a release. What else, if anything, occurred between the driver and the man prior to the shooting was not known.
Sheriff’s deputies aided the 20-year-old man who was shot until paramedics arrived and took him to a hospital, where he was stable, but in critical condition, officials said.
The rideshare driver was interviewed and later released at the scene. The assault victim was treated by paramedics at the scene, the department said.
The assault suspect could face charges pending further investigation, the department said.
Video from OnSceneTV at the scene showed deputies canvassing a street lined with garages in the apartment complex, while at least one man was seated on the curb. Later in the evening, investigators also appeared to be searching a minivan.
Dario Egas, who lives at the complex, told OnSceneTV he heard a lot of noise prior to the shooting and that the complex is normally quiet unless there are children playing outside.
“I thought it was maybe kids running around and then it sounded like grown-ups yelling … and then we heard two shots,” Egas said. “(Afterwards) it was just quiet for maybe 10 minutes and then we heard the sirens and the helicopter.”
