SAN JOSE — A woman has been arrested and charged with murder in the fatal stabbing of a man near downtown San Jose this past weekend, police said.
Sylvia Ortega, 28, a San Jose resident, was arrested Wednesday at a home in the city, according to a San Jose Police Department news release.
Records show that Ortega was booked into the Elmwood women’s jail in Milpitas, where she was initially being held without bail. She was charged Friday and was scheduled to be arraigned that afternoon in a San Jose courtroom.
Police did not disclose a motive or what led up to the fatal attack reported at 11:19 a.m. Sunday, with a 911 caller describing a “person down” near East Santa Clara and 17th streets. Officers arrived to find a man suffering from a stabbing injury, and along with medics tried to resuscitate him, but he died at the scene.
The victim’s name has not been publicly released pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office. But he was described as a 49-year-old man on a public listing from the office.
