Suspected California package thief killed in solo crash 2 miles from alleged theft

A man suspected of stealing a package in Arcadia was killed in a crash in Monrovia early Wednesday, June 5, authorities said.

A package equipped with a GPS device was stolen around 4:30 a.m. from a home in the 200 block of East Sycamore Avenue, according to the Arcadia Police Department. A solo collision about two miles away along the 300 block of West Maple Avenue in Monrovia was discovered by officers while tracking the package.

Two people were inside the vehicle, with the driver pronounced dead at the scene and a passenger taken to a hospital for moderate injuries.

The package, along with more stolen mail, was found inside the vehicle.

Information on the suspect, an update on the passenger or how the vehicle crashed was not immediately available.
