FILE — The deactivated Forrestal-class USS Ranger aircraft carrier can be seen at Panama City Bay on April 7, 2015. The USS Ranger (CVA-61), one of four supercarriers built in the 50’s, was commissioned on 1957, served during the Vietnam war and appeared in television and in several movies, among them Top Gun. Decommissioned in 1993, she departed Bremerton, Washington on March 2015 and currently is on her way to Brownsville, Texas, where she will be scrapped. On July 29, 1967, an accidental rocket launch on the deck of the supercarrier USS Forrestal in the Gulf of Tonkin resulted in a fire and explosions that killed 134 service members.
