Construction workers for the city of Pittsburg completed installing a giant block-letter sign spelling the city's name as part of a Railroad Avenue beautification project on June 3, 2024. The sign was funded through grant monies as was the pocket park being built at the site on Railroad Avenue a block from Pittsburg High School (Zuna Barker Portillo/City of Pittsburg).

PITTSBURG —  Contra Costa County health workers are responding to a suspected chlorine leak near a local chemical plant and alerting residents to be aware of possible health hazards.

The department’s Hazmat Team responded to an incident at Corteva Agriscience facility. The plant is located on Lovridge Road, about 2.6 miles east of downtown Pittsburg. Corteva is an agricultural manufacture company that produces fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and seed treatments that protect against weeds and diseases.

People in the area could possibly experience eye, skin, nose or throat irritation, the department states.

If people experience any irritation, they should go inside and rinse irritated areas of the body with water. Those with respiratory sensitivities should use caution and avoid the area.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
