A man died and five people, including a child, were found clinging to a boat after the vessel overturned Sunday afternoon, Nov. 3, in the ocean off of Redondo Beach.

The incident was reported around 1:08 p.m. about one mile offshore from the Avenue C Lifeguard Tower at Los Angeles County Beach, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Investigators learned that a caller reported the overturned boat via cellphone to the Redondo Beach Harbor Patrol and said people were in the water and clinging to the boat, the sheriff’s department said.

Harbor patrol and Baywatch Lifeguards arrived and rescued five people, including a child and the captain of the boat.

After a sixth person was reported missing, a rescue diver found him inside the overturned boat. Officials attempted life-saving measures, but the man died at the scene.

The man who dies was later identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Fredrico Salguero, 56.

The surviving occupants were taken to a hospital and were reported to be stable.

Water conditions were choppy and not ideal for boating, a lifeguard told ABC7. ABC7 said the vessel was 25 feet long.

The Sheriff’s Department’s Homicide Bureau and the U.S. Coast Guard are investigating the situation.
