ALAMEDA COUNTY — A motorcyclist died Wednesday night on Interstate 580 from injuries suffered when he was hit by the drivers of an SUV and a semi-truck who both fled the scene, the California Highway Patrol said Thursday.

The name of the man killed was not immediately released, pending notification of his family by the San Joaquin County Coroner’s Office.

The CHP said the motorcyclist was eastbound on Interstate 580 just west of Grant Line Road near the Stone Cut railroad overcrossing about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.

The CHP said according to initial reports, a gold SUV, possibly an older-model Lexus, was weaving erratically and unsafely through traffic before it veered from the lane closest to the center divider into the No. 2 lane, sideswiping the motorcyclist, who was splitting the two lanes.

The rider and the motorcycle fell into the No. 3 lane, underneath a passing semi truck, the CHP said.

Both the SUV and the truck briefly stopped on the shoulder before fleeing the scene, the CHP said.

The motorcyclist was taken to a Tracy hospital, where he died.

The CHP said the semi-truck was hauling a white shipping container with red lettering on the side.

Both vehicles and the drivers were being sought Thursday.

Anyone with information about the SUV and the truck and the drivers is asked to call the CHP Dublin office at 925-828-0466.
